Tencent Games becomes a Gold Sponsor of the MariaDB Foundation
The MariaDB Foundation today announces that Tencent Games – online game developer and operator by Tencent Interactive Entertainment – has become a Gold Sponsor of the MariaDB Foundation. As one of the world’s largest video game companies, Tencent Games shows the way to the ceaselessly-growing video game industry by supporting the open source development of MariaDB.
The sponsorship will help the Foundation in its mission to ensure continuity and open collaboration in the MariaDB ecosystem, and to drive adoption, serving an ever growing community of users and developers.
Tencent has been actively supporting the open collaboration in MariaDB environment since 2016. The MariaDB Foundation is also sponsored by Tencent Cloud, Tencent TDSQL and Tencent Game DBA Team which’s mission is to provide online storage services for Tencent Games.
MariaDB and MySQL are widely used in many Tencent business groups, and Tencent also has it’s own versions of MySQL (called TenDB, TDSQL and TXSQL).
The storage requirements of game business keep evolving, and this emerges need for new features and performance improvement. The Tencent Game DBA Team maintains several database products of their own, for example, TenDB – a MySQL branch that features single machine performance improvements and core functionalities vital to the game business. As a result of successful collaboration, a few features – such as Instant ADD COLUMN for InnoDB – from TenDB and TenDB Cluster have been submitted and merged to MariaDB’s main branch.
“Unique and massively used inventions are the best contribution to the open source community!”, states Tencent’s Commonality Research Operation System General Manager Xiaochun Cui, who clarified the vision and encouraged Tencent Games in making their contribution to MariaDB.
