Wrapping up the MariaDB Bucharest Meetup

This past Friday was reserved for our very own cozy event in Bucharest, planned by the romanian squad of the MariaDB Foundation. With an audience ranging from students just starting out on their journey up to seniors with experience in multiple database servers and AI, lots of interesting talks took place. We were glad to meet the Head of Domains and IT Technology of our gold sponsor, IONOS.
Although not his first visit in Romania, Monty’s attendance was a welcome sight, even bringing in people from the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
Vector centric
We started out strong with MariaDB’s native vector search feature, diving into the implementation details as well as a live demo comparison. All this presented by our newly promoted VP of Software Engineering, Vicentiu Ciorbaru.

Migrations don’t have to be scary
After a short break for pizza, we continued with a talk about the ease and advantages of migrating to MariaDB. We focused on the cost differences but also on the initial assessment for the user’s needs during a migration. These can largely depend on their current use case. One attendee also told us that in his search for a working MySQL connector, he happened to find the MariaDB connector. He found out that it was fully compatible with his needs out of the box.
Open source is here to stay
We concluded our planned talks with a presentation detailing licensing models along with their advantages and disadvantages. Monty shared some insight from his extensive experience and past decisions. A few myths around switching to open source were successfully dismissed. Among them, not being able to obtain proper funding, not being a cost effective switch from a business point of view and many more.

We went over the allocated time by around 40 minutes and we’ll take this as a sign of success. We would like to thank all of our attendees for joining us on Friday and contributing to the great atmosphere. See you next time!
