The Explain Analyzer and HeidiSQL

A few months ago we announced the EXPLAIN Analyzer, a simple tool to help you understand how MariaDB / MySQL was running queries. For users of HeidiSQL this is now even easier. As discussed in their news post you can now send a query to the EXPLAIN analyzer with a single click.

We hope this helps both new and experienced users better understand the queries they run.

More information about the EXPLAIN Analyzer and the simple API client authors can use to add support to their apps is available in the AskMonty Knowledgebase:

Announcing the Explain Analyzer

The explain statement can be an important tool for understanding how a query is being executed and what you can do to make it run better.  Although the output of EXPLAIN is relatively straightforward it can be confusing to inexperienced users or can be mangled by terminal wrapping.

To help with these problems as well as provide a pastebin for MariaDB developers to share explains during development we created The MariaDB/MySQL Explain Analyzer. This tool:

  1. Helps unmangle explains (both vertical and tabular format)
  2. Displays explains in an easy-to-read format.
  3. Highlights and provides explanations for some terms.

How the MariaDB download system works

During my years at MySQL AB I had the unfortunate task of manually maintaining the download page for enterprise customers. This involved a ton of boring, error prone work and almost always led to some sort of error every release. Some of our downloads were eventually replaced with an automated system written by the web team but the memory of all that time wasted still hurts me. So when I joined Monty Program and saw our downloads were manually maintained in mediawiki I knew something had to change.

Most of the websites for Monty Program and the MariaDB project are written with Django so this is where I started. …

The AskMonty Knowledge Base – Open for editing

Almost a year ago we launched the AskMonty Knowledgebase, a home for information on MariaDB and MySQL. When we launched, only employees had access to write articles, though anyone could ask a question. This was done for technical reasons. The good news is that that has changed, with the latest version we just pushed live, anyone with an account (or an open ID) can create and edit articles.

There is only so much content we can write so we want your contributions, from completely new articles to editing and improving what we already have. If you have questions on how to get started, you can join the Maria Docs group on launchpad and ask on the mailing list. …

Şerefe! – The MariaDB Knowledge Base in Istanbul

Monty Program along with various guests and our friends at the recently founded SkySQL recently wrapped up a meeting in Istanbul Turkey. Sadly it rained most days but we had a good time and got a lot done.

Besides learning how to say “Şerefe” which is “Cheers” in Turkish, we discussed the future of MariaDB, our companies goals, the MariaDB knowledge base and many other topics. Since I am the web guy, I lead the presentation / talk on the KB and thought I would share some highpoints of it with you.

If you don’t know, the KB is located at http://kb.askmonty.org. …
