We’ve made significant progress on MariaDB Catalogs, and while there’s still work to be done, we’re excited to offer the community an easy way to try out our preview release. You no longer need to compile the source code yourself—just use our prebuilt containers, now available on our official quay.io development registry.
The code is available publicly on Github, in a separate repo compared to the official MariaDB Server (until the feature gets published as part of an official MariaDB Server release)
Documentation is available on the Knowledge Base.

Confirming what you probably already expected: MariaDB Server 11.8 will be a long-term support release.
Now a Release Candidate – GA in May
With MariaDB Vector as the lead new feature, MariaDB 11.8 succeeds the previous LTS MariaDB 11.4 from a year ago.
As of now, MariaDB 11.8 is at the Release Candidate stage, with GA planned for May.
Lots of new features since MariaDB 11.4
MariaDB 11.8 has about 60 features, large and small, on top of the previous LTS, MariaDB 11.4. At our recent MariaDB Day on 1 Feb 2025 in Brussels, MariaDB Corporation Chief Architect Sergei Golubchik gave an overview of 11.8.

The MariaDB Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of MariaDB 11.7.1, the latest rolling release Release Candidate (RC), and MariaDB 11.6.2, the latest Generally Available (GA) rolling release.
A subset of the new features in MariaDB 11.7 include:
- Vectors
- Optimizer improvements (including the Charset Narrowing Optimization being on by default)
- Functions for generating version 4 and version 7 UUIDs
- The ROW data type as a return value in stored procedures

Fifteen years ago, iPhone OS overtook Windows Mobile in worldwide smartphone market share, but still trailed the giants of Blackberry’s RIM and Symbian, used by market leader Nokia, while Google’s new Android ecosystem was just starting to show signs of momentum.
And in the database world, as Oracle moved to acquire MySQL, a new upstart called MariaDB was born as a fork of MySQL, birthed by MySQL founder Monty Widenius with the support of many of the original MySQL developers.
