FOSDEM 2024 follow-up
What a FOSDEM weekend in Brussels! This was MariaDB Foundation’s best FOSDEM ever, although it wasn’t a FOSDEM at all. Confused? Stay tuned.
A live migration from MySQL 5.7
The highlight in several respects was the live migration of the Cantamen cluster from MySQL 5.7 to MariaDB 10.11.
Currently, cantamen operates a MySQL 5.7 master-slave-replication cluster as backbone for our Carsharing system software solution “EBuS”. We are the leading provider in this market serving some 10.000 vehicles for roughly estimated 150.000 users. […]

Looking for more migration guinea pigs
Remember our open letter, Looking for MySQL 5.7 or 8.0 guinea pigs?
We caught a nice German guinea pig!
We caught a nice guinea pig, a German one, from Hannover. They are currently using MySQL 5.7 (as was our prime wish), and they will be doing a live migration to MariaDB 10.11. They have 1.000.000.000 queries a day, their database size is 412 GB, and our goal is to the migration of the production data in less than five minutes […]

Looking for MySQL 5.7 or 8.0 guinea pigs
Dear users of MySQL 5.7 (or 8.0)!
Are you interested in getting help migrating to MariaDB 10.6 or 10.11, the latest long-term support releases? Are you coming to Brussels for FOSDEM in February? Do you have an open attitude, not minding to show a bit of dirty laundry in front of other users?
Then you may be a perfect candidate for our MariaDB Migration Workshop at our pre-FOSDEM event on Friday 2 Feb 2024. The workshop will be led by […]

Attending Percona University in Athens 2023
It’s been a while since we posted about community organised events. I’m happy to have the chance to talk about my experience attending Percona University in Athens.
For those in a hurry, the main topics are:1. Databases in the cloud, why vendor-lock is important to consider.2. How to build Open Source databases, FerretDB and TiDB, two completely different approaches.3. Upgrading from MySQL 5.7, monitoring and AI to speed up things.
Seeing familiar faces, discussing database experiences
When working within the […]

We are happy to release the schedule (https://mariadb.org/fest2023-schedule/) of our upcoming meeting week Tue-Thu 3-5 October 2023.
The week comes with meetings in four flavours:
During the week, we plan to work on the MariaDB Server roadmap together with ecosystem members who drive it. Center stage here is MariaBD plc, but we also intend to take new steps in the direction towards being a true multi-vendor product.
Note that all times are in local Finland time, which is UTC+3 in […]

Join us in planning the MariaDB Server Roadmap
MariaDB Foundation is having its next planning session for the MariaDB Server Roadmap at our MariaDB Unconference Tue-Wed 3-4 October 2023.
All key contributors will be there
This will be a top-level meeting with representatives of all key contributors to MariaDB Server. From MariaDB plc, we will have CTO Jonah Harris and VP Server Engineering Sergei Golubchik representing management and resource allocation. But MariaDB Server is not a one-vendor product. We expect similar level representation from our second-biggest contributor, Amazon, […]

MariaDB & IONOS: Improving performance for hosting
The MariaDB Foundation values our partnerships with our sponsors. Our partnership with IONOS allows us to get insight into how MariaDB Server is used and the direction it should take. As well as generally improving MariaDB Server in many different ways.
IONOS story
At CloudFest 2023, one of the first meetings we had was with Stefan Erkeling from IONOS. It was a very good meeting and it was great to see how much IONOS values our partnership. Stefan indicated in […]
