Seppo Jaakola is going to present the topic “MariaDB Galera Cluster Security” at the Security MariaDB Server Fest (Wed 6 April 2022).
I’m currently watching his talk. Let me share with you some details. Seppo is not talking about native MariaDB security features that are by default supported by Galera, but due to the distributed cluster topology additional security related measures are needed. He talks about cluster topology, cluster communication security, Galera enhancement Data at REST encryption and the new 10.9 feature Node screening by IP Allowlist.

Galera R&D team is currently finalizing new features targeted for the next MariaDB 10.5 release. This presentation is a high level overview of the most prominent Galera clustering features under work, such as:
* Non Blocking DDL – for less turbulence of schema upgrades in a cluster
* Cluster Error Voting – for immediate recovery of node failures
* XA transaction Support – for executing XA transactions in a multi-master cluster
* GTID consistency – for consistent GTIDs in hybrid cluster / replication topologies
* Black Box – cluster hardening through more detailed diagnostics

The Debian project announced their 15th release, code name Buster, on July 6th 2019. Debian 10 ships with MariaDB 10.3 and Galera. There is no separate MariaDB Connector C package, but instead MariaDB 10.3 includes MariaDB Connector C 3.0. Like most other popular Linux distributions, Debian prefers MariaDB over the Oracle owned alternative and this is now the second major release of Debian that only ships with MariaDB, and no MySQL at all. Anybody attempting to run apt install mysql-server will end up with MariaDB server instead and any upgrades from older MySQL versions to new MariaDB versions happen seamlessly, just like users have learnt to expect from apt. …
