FOSDEM 2021 was amazing. MariaDB had a developer room and Foundation members contributed talks to a number of other developer rooms. We were listening for ways in which MariaDB server could be improved during all these talks, regardless of which room our MariaDB Foundation staff were in.
MariaDB server developers present provided information related to recently fixed/improved items and things that are planned to be fixed.
Our interactions with the community of users present, many of which we know, gave us an opportunity to have a dialog about some of the parts of MariaDB that they would like improved.

You can take FOSDEM out of Brussels, but you cannot take the Brussels out of FOSDEM. Meeting virtually is different, but FOSDEM once again succeeded in invigorating spirits and building bonds between developers.
Picture on top: myself “at FOSDEM” 2021. Missing the crowds, but still getting interaction!
Presentations now live on YouTube
The MariaDB presenters, the MariaDB Devroom organising committee and the team at MariaDB Foundation put considerable effort into all MariaDB talks at FOSDEM. The 24 MariaDB related talks are now all available on-line as a YouTube playlist on https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaJ5BwLUdDZ-JQME9xbO2UD3uvBXnizM1
Still friends with MySQL
MariaDB Foundation got its first-ever devroom just for MariaDB Server.

Today FOSDEM has started! Attend the live sessions happening in the MariaDB devroom (10-18 CET) – and chat about the sessions. Visit the MariaDB Stand (9:30-18) with its own chatroom. And take our poll. Note! We have video issues with the live Q&A – hope it will be fixed through FOSDEM later today. Arranging a meeting for 8000 developers is hard, and attending it can be bewildering – also online.
More notes: How To FOSDEM 2021.
Around this time each year, thousands of free and open source developers gather in Brussels for FOSDEM.

The first dedicated MariaDB devroom at FOSDEM is being held on Saturday 6 February. In previous years, the joint MySQL, MariaDB and Friends devroom has been overwhelmed with submissions. With the event going virtual, there was space for separate MySQL and MariaDB rooms this year, giving us twice as much time to showcase talks of interest to the community. We were very pleased to receive 33 submissions, although this was still far more than we had space to accommodate.
The committee, consisting of Aurélien Lequoy (68koncept), Colin Charles, Daniel Bartholomew (MariaDB Corporation), Manuel Arostegui (Wikimedia Foundation), Sveta Smirnova (Percona) and Vicențiu Ciorbaru (MariaDB Foundation) was given the task of whittling down the number, and decided on the following talks.

We are pleased to announce the FOSDEM21 MariaDB devroom committee.
In February 2021, MariaDB will for the first time be hosting a dedicated devroom at FOSDEM, and the committee are tasked with narrowing down the submitted presentations to choose the most interesting final selection for the FOSDEM and MariaDB communities.
In past years, as part of the joint MySQL, MariaDB and Friends devroom, the number of submissions far exceeded the available slots, and we look forward to burdening the committee with a similar problem this year.

Welcome to everyone, and we can’t wait to see what you decide on!

Earlier this week we were happy to announce that MariaDB will have its own devroom at FOSDEM21, taking place on 6 February 2021, and now the CfP is open.
FOSDEM is free to attend, and no registration is necessary. It’s aimed at free and open-source developers, so engineering and DBA-related topics such as:
- best practices
- migrating to MariaDB
- MariaDB features
- optimising on particular hardware
are all welcome. Submissions that miss the mark, such as marketing talks, are not welcome.
We are expecting far more submissions than we can accommodate, so we are looking for 20 minute talks (with an extra 5m for questions) to accommodate as many high-quality speakers as possible.

FOSDEM gives energy. FOSDEM gives ideas. FOSDEM opens up opportunities, FOSDEM allows you to connect with old friends and colleagues. Hence, no big surprise that MariaDB Foundation attended FOSDEM, in order to promote Open Source and to get ourselves closer to the community.
Starting from a pre-FOSDEM dinner with Member of the European Parliament Nils Torvalds, over Open Source Diva Danese Cooper’s keynote about “Open Source is Art”, to the MySQL, MariaDB and Friends Devroom and Sunday’s MariaDB Day, concluding with OpenForum Europe’s meeting on Monday, my previous weekend was packed with encounters, discussions, and ideas around Open Source.
