One week left to join AI RAG Hackathon by Helsinki Python meetup (remote participation possible)

One week left to join the AI RAG Hackathon with MariaDB Vector and Python!

Winners get to demo at the Helsinki Python meetup in May, receive merit and publicity from MariaDB Foundation and Open Ocean Capital, and prizes from Finnish verkkokauppa.com.

To participate, gather a team (1-5 people) and submit an idea by the end of March for one of the two tracks. You then have until May 5th to develop the idea before the meetup 27th May.

  1. Integration track: Enable MariaDB Vector in an existing open source project or AI-framework.

Join our AI Hackathon with MariaDB Vector

We are excited to announce a hackathon with MariaDB Vector and Python. Since we are reaching outside our bubble, let’s start from the beginning:

MariaDB, the open-source database powers the world’s most demanding applications, from Wikipedia to global financial institutions. Now MariaDB Vector is bringing AI-ready vector search natively into the open-source database world. MySQL users ahoy:

Our hackathon is your chance to explore AI possibilities with MariaDB Vector and Python. Whether you’re a developer, data scientist, or AI enthusiast, MariaDB Foundation invites you to build innovative AI applications, compete for prizes, and showcase your work.

Attending Percona University in Athens 2023

It’s been a while since we posted about community organised events. I’m happy to have the chance to talk about my experience attending Percona University in Athens.

For those in a hurry, the main topics are:
1. Databases in the cloud, why vendor-lock is important to consider.
2. How to build Open Source databases, FerretDB and TiDB, two completely different approaches.
3. Upgrading from MySQL 5.7, monitoring and AI to speed up things.

On the left we have Ananias Tsalouchidis, who gave a talk on upgrading from MySQL 5.7

Seeing familiar faces, discussing database experiences

When working within the MariaDB Foundation, it isn’t always easy to get feedback on what works and what doesn’t.

Developer meeting & community meetup summary

MariaDB 10.1 shipped a few days ago, so it’s now a good time to focus on another important event. Last week we had a three day MariaDB developers meeting. It took place in Amsterdam (Oct 13-15). Meetings like this tend to have a great impact on the roadmap of the product. Booking.com was very kind to offer their facilities for the developer meeting.

Thank you Booking.com!

The day before the developer meeting there was a MySQL meetup arranged at eBay’s office in Amsterdam since, naturally, a lot of MariaDB developers were already in town for the developers meeting.
