Good news! cPanel, one of the leading control panels in the hosting world has just announced that they are going to make MariaDB Server the default database when installing new cPanel instances. This change is slated to occur in version 122 of cPanel & WHM, coming in Q3 of 2024. We at MariaDB Foundation are very happy about this decision and are looking forward to continuous collaboration, to the benefit of our users and the MariaDB Server project.
We think that this is a great decision for cPanel users because we at MariaDB have stayed true to the original values of MySQL, including:
- Long term backwards compatibility
- Painless upgrades and ease of use

HELSINKI — 4 October 2023 – The MariaDB Foundation, the global contact point for collaboration on the MariaDB Server, announced today that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has joined the Foundation as its first Diamond sponsor in order to continue the mission of openness, adoption and continuity for the MariaDB open source project.
According to the DB-Engines ranking list, the MariaDB Server is the third most popular open source relational database and ninth most popular relational database overall. This sponsorship will allow the Foundation to continue investing in its compatibility with other popular database solutions as well as to explore the role MariaDB Server can play in the growing world of generative AI.

The MariaDB Foundation is proud to put its name behind the SaveDotOrg campaign. We urge the Internet Society (ISOC) to cancel the sale of the Public Interest Registry (PIR) to Ethos Capital. NGOs and non-profits rely on the .org domain, and the proposed sale to a private equity firm puts this pillar of internet freedom at significant risk.
